Changing trends in the modern education system and the mushrooming of unaided institutions have dealt a deathblow to the staggering parallel college system in Kerala. The delinking of the pre-degree course and introduction of grading system have contributed to their downfall. Last year, about 200 tutorial colleges closed down and about 1,000 resorted to introduction of various professional courses to survive the crisis.
