Taking technology to the villages

CHENNAI, JAN.26. A three-day national symposium on `Empowering the rural population for economic development through transfer of technology' was conducted recently by the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India.

This was a forum for participants to get to know about the recent developments in technology and learn how to apply these technologies in rural areas.

The presentations covered concepts, methodology, designs and cost estimates on rural housing, water supply, sanitation, renewable sources of energy and welding, printing, electrical and computer maintenance in rural areas.

More than 100 principals and faculty from the engineering discipline of various colleges and polytechnics in South India attended the symposium.

M. Anandakrishnan, chairman, Madras Institute of Development Studies, inaugurated the symposium. G.B. Jaiprakash Narain, director of the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, delivered the presidential address.
