Two waylaid, killed

AMALAPURAM: Two members of a family -- B. Subba Rao (45) and B. Balaraju (48) -- were waylaid and killed in broad daylight near Mahipalacheruvu village in Mummidivaram mandal on Thursday.

According to reports, the two were going on a cycle to attend a court case in Amalapuram in the morning when they were attacked by a group of persons wielding knives on the Mahipalacheruvu road. While one of them died on the spot, the other succumbed to injuries in hospital. The assailants later fled the scene. The police suspect old rivalry between two groups is the cause of the murder.

Assume office

Hyderabad: Gidugu Rudraraju, APCC secretary, took over as chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Medical and Health Infrastructure Corporation here on Thursday.

Makhan Singh Thakur took over as chairman of the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP).

S. Ramakrishna Reddy of Visakhapatnam, who took over as chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Warehousing Corporation (APSWC), assured farmers of striving to provide better service to them.

While Bakka Judson took over as chairman of Andhra Pradesh Vikalangula Cooperative Corporation, K. Nallappa Reddy assumed office as chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Irrigation Development Corporation Limited. Premlal took over as chairman of the Backward Classes Corporation.

Pakistan envoy's visit

HYDERABAD: The Pakistan High Commissioner, Aziz Ahmed Khan on Thursday went around the Salarjung Museum. He was accompanied by his wife.

On arrival, he was received by the Museum Director, A.K.V.S. Reddy, and the Curator, Ahmed Ali Khan. Also present was the editor, Siasat Urdu daily, Zahed Ali Khan.

He and his wife spent some time gazing at the famous `Veiled Rebecca' and posed for photographs.

Later, he went to Mecca Masjid and Charminar. He participated in a dinner organised in his honour by the TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, at the latter's residence.

Train halt at Nalwar

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway has arranged temporary stoppage of two minutes at Nalwar railway station from February 7 to 15 for two trains in view of the Korisiddeshwar jatra mahotsav.

According to an SCR press release, train No. 1063/1064 Dadar-Chennai-Dadar express and train No. 1013/1014 Mumbai-(LTT)-Coimbatore-Mumbai express will halt at Nalwar.

The Mumbai-Coimbatore express will arrive/depart Nalwar at 10.34/10.36 a.m. and in return direction it will arrive/depart at 10.56/10.58 pm. The Dadar-Chennai express will arrive/depart Nalwar at 7.34/7.36 a.m. and in return direction it will arrive/depart at 6.38/6.40 pm.

IA withdraws flights

VISAKHAPATNAM: Indian Airlines has announced withdrawal of some flights and a change in the timings of some others due to operational reasons. This will come into effect on Friday.

According to the IA Area Marketing Manager, Bharat Kashyap, the flights 7541 and 7542 in the Chennai-Vizag-Bhubaneswar-Kolkata sector will be withdrawn on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays while flights 7478 and 7477 in the Vizag-Raipur sector would be withdrawn on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

There is also a change of flight timings in the case of IC 7477 and IC 7478:

IC 7477: Delhi departure at 10.30 and Vizag arrival at 12-40. Vizag departure at 13.10 and Chennai arrival at 14.15.

IC 7478: Chennai departure at 11.15 and Vizag arrival at 12.20. Vizag departure at 12.50 and Delhi arrival at 15.05. However, there is no change in the timings of other flights from Visakhapatnam.

Speaker treks up Tirumala

TIRUPATI: The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, K.R. Suresh Reddy, who arrived here on Thursday on a two-day pilgrimage, trekked up the Tirumala foot-path. Mr. Reddy, who worshipped in the hill temple in the night, will visit the temple again on Friday. The Speaker earlier offered prayers at the Sri Lakshminarayana temple.

APERC hearing postponed

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission has postponed its public hearings on the tariff proposals submitted by APTransco and its four discoms for 2005-06 slated from January 31 at different places in the State. This is in view of the change in free power policy announced by the Government.

Isolated rain forecast

Hyderabad: Owing to an upper air circulation extending to Telangana from neighbouring states, there was rain at a few places n Telangana on Thursday. The rain was isolated in Coastal Andhra while weather was dry in Rayalaseema.

Jagtiyal received a rainfall of 5 cm, Ramagundam, Tekkali 3 cm each and Nizamabad 1 cm.

Minimum temperature fell at one or two places in Telangana and it changed a little in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. The lowest temperature for the day was recorded by Arogyavaram at 18 degree Celsius.

Isolated rain or thundershowers in Telangana and the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari was forecast for Friday.

Honour for NCC cadet

CUDDAPAH: An NCC cadet, Dhanalakshmi, studying B.Sc. second year in YSRM Degree College here, participated in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi yesterday.

Chosen through the Andhra Pradesh NCC Directorate, she underwent training at Garasium parade grounds at New Delhi from December 28, said the college NCC Officer, Vijayabhaskar, in a statement.

Appointed RTC zonal chairman

NELLORE: Poosala Rangaiah, a senior Congress functionary, took over as Zonal Chairman, APSRTC, Nellore, and Director, on Thursday.

Talking to reporters on the occasion, Mr. Rangaiah, said he would pursue with the Government and the corporation authorities to reimburse the expenditure relating to payment of Motor Vehicle tax and concessions to various sections of community.

Eye camp held

NELLORE: A free mega eye camp will be held at A.V.S. Eye Clinic, Nellore, on Sunday, from 8 a.m. onwards.

According to Krishnaprasad, the consultant ophthalmologist, apart from free treatment, spectacles will also be handed over free in all deserving cases.

`TVS Star'

bike launched

TIRUPATI: ``TVS Star'', a 100 cc bike from the TVS stable was formally launched in the Tirupati market on Thursday, filling the long-felt void in the entry-level segment.

The bike, which comes with a two-year warranty, is being projected as the company's silver jubilee gift. The Hyderabad ex-showroom price is Rs.30,990. The Area sales manager (Andhra Pradesh), N.Srikanth, Area service manager, K. Sivakumar and S.Venkatraman of Vijaya Bharati TVS, were present at the launch.

Felicitation TIRUPATI: The district Mahila Congress president, M.R.V. Santhamma, who has recently been appointed the regional organiser for Women Development and Child Welfare panel for the districts of Chittoor, Cuddapah and Anantapur, was felicitated by Sri Shakti development society, a mutually-aided cooperative society on Thursday. MLA M.Venkatramana and senior Congress leader, K. Prameelamma, honoured her with a shawl and a memento.

Bomb scare

NANDYAL: Bomb scare in a school created flutter at Nandyal on Thursday.

The correspondent of the school, Jessy Paul, reportedly received a phone call saying that a bomb was planted on the school premises.

The police were alerted and a holiday was declared for the school sending the children home. The search proved it to be hoax.
