Belgaum tops in gram panchayats

BANGALORE, JAN. 30. <150>Belgaum district has the highest number of gram panchayats in the State. There are 472 gram panchayats in the district with a total of 8,267 seats. It is followed by Gulbarga district (330 gram panchayats and 5,816 seats) and Tumkur district (320 and 5,333). The seats have been demarcated on the basis of 2001 Census and there is one gram panchayat seat for a population of 400.

The break-up of the number of gram panchayats and seats in other districts is as follows: Haveri 197 and 2,809; Koppal 132 and 2,556; Chitradurga 182 and 3,171; Gadag 102 and 1,557; Shimoga 253 and 2,721; Hassan 246 and 3,539; Bangalore Rural 212 and 3,561; Dakshina Kannada 199 and 3,157; Mysore 235 and 4,300; Bidar 170 and 2,903; Bijapur 199 and 3,626; Bagalkot 157 and 2,869; Uttara Kannada 206 and 2,622; Bellary 188 and 3,399; Raichur 164 and 3,276; Davangere 222 and 3,155; Dharwad 122 and 1,780; Udupi 143 and 2,323; Chikmagalur 219 and 2,305; Bangalore Urban 110 and 2,426; Kodagu 96 and 1,213; Chamarajanagar 120 and 2,061; and Mandya 228 and 3,773, according to State Election Commission.
