HYDERABAD: The AP Pollution Control Board organised a workshop on `Cleaner production concepts and methodologies for tanneries'.

"The conventional approach of tackling the problem has been the end of pipe approach requiring industries to install pollution control systems to meet the prescribed standards. This called for huge investments," a PCB press release said.

Addressing the problem at the source itself would drastically pollution, it said.

They felt that effluent generation could be reduced from 50,000 litres to 12,000 litres a tonne of the product by employing advanced technologies such as salt recovery system and high exhaustion tanning process.

Several scientists and representatives from tanneries were present at the workshop.
