Back Caution on Kerala groundwater levels Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Groundwater level in the State has been receding by 0.2 metres to 0.5 metres every year, according to a survey conducted by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB). The study singled out 151 blocks in the State including Kasargod, Kodungalloor (Thrissur) and Chirayinkeezh (Thiruvananthapuram) as among the most exploited, said Mr S.R. Tamta, Regional Director, CGWB, here on Monday. Six of these have been categorised `critical,' Mr Tamta said while presiding over an awareness programme on protection and conservation of groundwater resources. Though lower when compared to other States, a stage has been reached when authorities should reflect on what Mr Tamta described as `unsustainable' levels of exploitation of groundwater resources already reached in the State.
