New theory on rise in water level

HYDERABAD, FEB. 10. A scientific explanation is finally available on the phenomenon of sudden rise in water level in dried-up wells of Ranga Reddy district. Citing the findings of the studies made by different scientific groups, the State Groundwater officials said that it had nothing to do with tsunami. The study groups included the State and Central Groundwater departments, NGRI, Geological Survey of India and NRSA.

Quoting analysis of the studies made so far, Ramakrishna Desai, Deputy Director, who had associated himself with these studies, attributed the spurt in water level to sudden compression effects in the underlying geological formations.

It was found that favourable geological conduits had transmitted waters to these wells from irrigated lands. The defunct wells, stoppage of pumping in the area, diversion of drainage water into these wells, construction of horizontal bores and contribution from the nearby streams also precipitated the "perched water table" to gush out, he said.
