Back Meet lays stress on advanced welding process

THE country's power generation capacity now estimated at 1.1 lakh MW is expected to double by the year 2012 offering immense scope for advanced welding technologies and new generation equipment, according to Mr B. Ramachandra Rao, Executive Director of BHEL-Hyderabad.

Presiding over the concluding session of the International Welding Symposium, Dr Rao said that India has the potential to become a manufacturing hub for the entire world. With additional manufacturing capacity, there is potential for demand for welding process, as no equipment is complete without welding process.

This eight nation, three-day international welding symposium had participants from the US, UK, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Singapore, Ukraine and India. The symposium jointly hosted by BHEL along with German and Indian welding societies, with the theme of `Productive welding — Emerging scenario', hosted about 55 technical papers including 10 from abroad.

The symposium's thrust is on advanced welding process and equipment, including lasers, electronic beam welding, robotics and automated welding, backed by information technology as applied to welding applications including computer simulation and modelling.
