Rs. 1 crore more for Andamans from `The Hindu Relief Fund'

The Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu , N. Ram, presents a cheque for Rs. 1 crore to Ramachandra Ganesh Kapse, Lt. Governor, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in Chennai on Wednesday for tsunami relief in the islands.

CHENNAI, FEB. 23. A cheque for Rs. 1 crore from `The Hindu Relief Fund' was handed over to Ramachandra Ganesh Kapse, Lieutenant Governor, Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, here today, for tsunami rehabilitation in the islands.

The Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu , N. Ram, presented the cheque to the Lt. Governor, who was on his way from Port Blair to Goa.

Mr. Kapse said the contribution would be used for major tsunami rehabilitation works, especially for education in the rural areas and remote islands, where many schools had been devastated in the December 26 tsunami.

Mr. Ram explained that this contribution of Rs. 1 crore was in addition to the Rs. 2 crores already handed over to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, earlier for relief and rehabilitation in the islands. This was possible because of the generosity of the readers and well-wishers of the newspaper.

With this, a sum of Rs. 11 crores has been distributed to the tsunami-affected States and Union territories. Tamil Nadu has received Rs. 5 crores, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Rs. 3 crores, Kerala Rs. 1.5 crores, and Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry Rs. 75 lakhs each.
