A day of anxiety for students

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 28. Monday was a day of anxiety and tension for the Capital's three lakh students who will be taking the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class X and XII examinations that begin on Tuesday.

While 200,950 students will be appearing for the Class X examinations, 145,968 candidates will be taking the Class XII test at 500 centres across the city. Fewer Class X students will have their first Board experience, what with the subjects to be taken on Day One being Portuguese, Limboo, Home Science and Spanish. Class XII students will be out in full strength with Science students starting their Boards with Physics while Commerce students will have to test their skills in marketing. Also, Class XII examination to other subjects such as India -- tourist destination, food science and hygiene, basic design, vegetable culture and food preparation among others will also be held.

While a three-tier security system has been put in place by CBSE to ensure smooth conduct of the examinations, two Delhi Police personnel have been deputed for each centre to keep anti-social elements at bay. While assistant superintendents have been deputed by schools whose candidates are appearing at other centres, scanned photographs of private and patrachar students are being used this year to avoid any impersonation.

Apart from flying squads of the CBSE, special outside observers and flying squads of the Directorate of Education will be making rounds to keep a check on the situation. Special observers have also been appointed to take care of the centres identified as sensitive by the CBSE in various parts of the city.

Special arrangements have also been made for students suffering from audio-visual, physical impairment and dyslexia.

The Capital this year has 486 students appearing from Class X in the special category, while 337 candidates with special needs will take the Class XII examination.
