Legal awareness cell for the disabled inaugurated

BANGALORE, MARCH 3. As part of the information and resource centre for persons with disabilities established by VOICES in collaboration with the Office of the Commissioner for Disabilities and the State Department for the Welfare of the Disabled and Senior Citizens, a legal awareness cell was launched here on Thursday.

The State Commissioner for Disabilities, L. Krishnamurthi, inaugurated the legal awareness cell to provide legal assistance and advice to disabled persons on various issues. Shiv Kumar, senior advocate, who will provide legal advice at the cell, said apart from giving necessary assistance to persons with disabilities in legal matters, legal awareness workshops would be conducted for them to make disabled persons aware of their legal rights.

Pradeep Kumar, Assistant Commissioner for Disabilities, said his office was providing legal advice to disabled persons. Any case that needed expert advice would be referred to the VOICES Cell, he said.

Ashish Sen of VOICES said responding to the queries that the helpline at the information centre got, it was decided to have a legal awareness cell for disabled persons.

The cell will operate between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursdays. For details contact Ph: 25213903.
