Back IBM tops server market

IT major IBM said on Thursday that it has secured the first position in the country's server market. Quoting data from IDC's Asia/Pacific Quarterly Enterprise Server Tracker, Q4 2004, the company said it had a 30.5 per cent share of the revenue in 2004.

IBM registered 18.5 per cent compounded annual growth rate in domestic market and 25.3 per cent growth in exports.

Announcing the achievement, Mr Alok Ohrie, Vice-President — Systems and Technology Group, IBM India, said: "We intend to further consolidate our market share this year and extend our business focus to offer solution for the Government, telecom and financial service segments."

He expected to capture a market share of Rs 2,47,000 crore by 2008.

On being asked upon the key to success, he emphasised on power architecture roadmap, virtualisation and open standard technical superiority.

"Reducing the costs and making IT structure flexible are a few challenges that are to be overcome," Mr Ohrie said.

Mr Aman Muglani, Head-Computing Products and Channel Research, IDC India Ltd, said: "Pioneering efforts in leading technologies such as Blade and dedicated marketing focus on the small, medium business segments have definitely contributed to the annual revenue growth."

IBM has over 30,000 patents and provides a range of servers and storage products.
