THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Computers and computer technology have truly made the world a smaller place, said Mr B.J. Vasoya, President, The Institution of Engineers (India).

Inaugurating the 19th national convention of computer engineers in the city on Saturday, he said that it is not easy to predict the directions in which computer technology will develop. However, exciting times are ahead for the computer technology sector, he added.

The theme of the two-day conference, which is being hosted by the Kerala State Centre of The Institution of Engineers, is `New horizons in computing'. The conference will focus on three specific areas — mobile computing, grid computing and autonomic computing. According to the event's organisers, these three subjects are at the forefront of computing today.

Besides technical presentations on the three key themes, the conference also includes the Ramanujam Memorial Lecture by Dr D.S. Rane, former head of the Computer and Information Group, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre-Thiruvananthapuram.
