Weaving a new future
THE FISHERWOMEN of the tsunami-affected areas along the coast from Thiruvanmiyur right up to Allikuppam are depending on the sale of plastic wire baskets that they weave for their livelihood till they are able to resume fishing. The women have been trained to weave baskets by the vocational unit of the Madras Cheshire Homes. Up to 100 women from the kuppams have so far been equipped with this skill. The everyday tiffin basket has been given a designer touch and incorporates a cell phone pouch. It comes in a variety of colours, sizes and shapes. Small tiffin bags are also available for children. The baskets are on display at Cheshire Homes, 23, Third Seaward Road, Valmiki Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur (ph: 24417437) and the Guild of Service, 20, Casa Major Road, Egmore (28194828). (More details can be obtained by contacting 98401 93027.) Making cards in attractive designs for various occasions such as birthdays is another activity, the women have been trained in. The Cheshire Homes accepts orders for both baskets and cards.
