Back Match manufacturers' plea Our Correspondent
MADURAI: The All-India Federation of Cottage Matches Manufacturers' Association at Virudhunagar, near here has urged the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, in a memorandum to ban buying/selling of dipped splints from one factory to another on the ground that such transportation without packing would lead to fire accident. Pointing to a clarification issued by the office of the Commissioner of Central Excise, Tirunelveli, allowing the movement for duty paid dipped splints, it said it was hazardous in nature and could lead to loss of lives. According to the President of the association, Mr V.M.G. Rajasekaran, the movement even for a short distance could be dangerous. The contention of the Excise Department that the recipient factory would again pay 16 per cent duty on finished matches would not be realisable as it may be evaded.
