Research awards presentation tomorrow

HYDERABAD, MARCH 30. Dr. K.V. Rao Research awards for the fifth consecutive year will be given away at a function here on Friday to three eminent scientists at the university level. Besides, six school students will also be presented awards.

The awards, which are instituted by the Dr. K.V. Rao Scientific Society, are intended to encourage research in science, particularly in the field of chemistry and scientific disciplines where principles of chemistry are applied, K. Ratna, joint secretary of the society, has said.

She told presspersons on Wednesday that the eminent scientist award was meant for students who are under 30 years and who are either registered for the Ph.D programme in any university or working for any research organisations in Andhra Pradesh.

The award consists of a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 and a silver trophy to one promising young scientist and silver trophies to two more selected from the final presentations. The names of the winners would be announced on the day of the function, Dr. Ratna said.

She said the society had conducted a programme for schoolchildren in coordination with the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Science and Technology and selected six students for the awards this year.

The annual function would be held at the Bhaskara auditorium in B.M. Birla Science Museum at 5 p.m. on Friday. A memorial oration by Gullapalli N. Rao of the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute would also be held. Varaprasad Reddy, Managing Director, Shanta Biotechnics, would be the chief guest.
