THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre has extended its in-principle approval to a Rs 337-crore project for electrification of 879 villages in the State. This was the outcome of a videoconferencing session the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, had with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Monday. The Prime Minister had also similar sessions with other Chief Ministers close on the heels of the launch of the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Programme in New Delhi. Mr Oommen Chandy, who took part in the session from a base in the Technopark here, said the State had also submitted a proposal for setting up 15 sub-stations in seven districts. He expected to get necessary clearances for this as also for the proposed distribution backbone for rural areas without delay.
