Solatium given to widow of journalist
Tuticorin April 10. The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, today gave away a cheque for Rs. 2 lakhs to the widow of T.P.K. Sakthivel, reporter of `Makkal Kural,' who died in harness on November 15, 2003. Sakthivel, a native of Ettayapuram, died while he was working in Tirunelveli. Sources said the State Government allotted the amount from the Journalists' Family Welfare Fund. Nahomi Elizabeth, Tahsildar, Ettayapuram, was present.
Body recovered
Nagercoil April 10. The police today recovered the highly decomposed body of a youth from tank near Putheri here. According to the police, based on the information given by the public, the police recovered the body. However, they could not immediately ascertain the identity of the body. An investigation is on.
Boy drowned
TUTICORIN APRIL 10. Karthik (7) was drowned while taking bath in the Koramballam pond here today. The Pudukottai police are investigating.
BSNL revises commission
Tuticorin April 10. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has reduced the minimum guarantee of STD franchisees and revised the commission of STD PT (public telephone) commission. A release from BSNL General Manager said though the commission and guarantee slabs were revised, the rates for making calls from STD PTs remain unchanged. If calls were made from STD PT to BSNL cellphone connection, Rs 1.20 would be charged for 60 seconds, whereas, the calls to private mobiles would continue to attract Rs.1.20 for every 45 seconds. Customers were requested to lodge their complaints at 1095 or 0461-2323600.
Two held on murder charge
Tuticorin April 10. The police today arrested one Guruammal and her son, Appanasamy, on charges of murdering Muniasamy (40), husband of Guruammal, at Koppampatti on Saturday. According to the police, the accused murdered Munisamy following a quarrel. The police said Muniasamy was a drunkard, which triggered differences between him and his family for the past few months.
Six students injured in clash
THANJAVUR APRIL 10 . Six students were injured in a clash between two groups in the Thanjavur Medical College last night. The clash occurred after the college day function was over. The police said Ranjith Kumar, a third year student, invited 11 of his friends from other colleges at Chengalpattu to the function. When these students were returning to hostel in a van, they picked a quarrel with the hostel watchman and beat him up. Another group of students came to the rescue of the watchman and stoned the van. In the melee, six students were injured. The Medical College police arrested 11 students.
Boy found dead
PUDUKOTTAI APRIL 10 . A 13-year-old boy was found murdered near a burial ground at Thiruudayapatti near Arimalam last night. The victim, Ganesamoorthy, was a Standard VIII student of a private school here. Two police teams have been formed to probe the murder.
4,680 litres of kerosene seized
ERODE APRIL 10 . Revenue officials and Food Cell CID personnel seized 4,680 litres of kerosene meant for the public distribution system at Vellakoil. On a tip-off, the officials raided the premises of Thangavel at Injikattu thottam and found that the blue kerosene was being purified into white kerosene for being sold to lorries and tractors. The officials seized 3,400 litres. Thangavel was at large. The officials conducted a check on the house of Ravikumar, son of a retired village administrative officer, at Soriyankattu Palayam, and seized 1,280 litres of kerosene. Ravikumar was arrested.
`Fill court vacancies'
MADURAI APRIL 10 . The All-India Lawyers' Union has urged the Government to fill the vacancies of judicial officers and court staff in the State. In a statement here today, the general secretary, M. Subramanian, said there were at least 1,500 vacancies in different courts. The Government did not take steps to fill them because of the ban on recruitment and fund constraints. However, since the Government announced in the Assembly that there was no financial crisis and increased pension for MLAs and former legislators, the court vacancies should be filled.
Award for Baldev Raj
CHENNAI APRIL 10 . The Jaeger Lecture Award of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and International Standards Organisation (ISO) has been conferred on Baldev Raj, Director, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, in recognition of his contribution to welding and `hard facing'. The research work of Dr. Raj, the first Indian to receive the award, led to a substantial cut in cost and plant downtime. The IIW is a premier body consisting of experts from 30 countries, and formulates welding directions and policies. Dr. Raj has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2004 from the Indian Welding Society.
Exam results
CUDDALORE APRIL 10 . The results of the Annamalai University distance education regular stream/open university stream examinations, held in December 2004 for B. Ed., M.Ed., M. Phil, PG Diplomas and Diplomas, will be available on the Internet from April 11. The results will be posted on www.annamalai university.ac.in and www.chennaionline.com, and also on Voice Net (04144-237356 to 237359), says a university release.
Australian owl found
DINDIGUL APRIL 10 . An Australian owl, found by the locals at Nagal Nagar here, was handed to the Forest Department this evening. After chased by other birds, the owl fell on the street. S. Nalla Mohammad, a milk vendor, took it to a fire service station. It was later handed over to Forest Department officials at the Collectorate.
