APCC chief gearing up for `shanti yatra'

HYDERABAD: The APCC president, K. Keshava Rao, is all set to take out Gandhi Shanti Sandesh Yatra from Thakkalapalli tanda in Ibrahimpatnam mandal of Ranga Reddy district from April 22 coinciding with Mahavir jayanti.

Giving details of the tentative programme here on Sunday, Mr. Rao said the `yatra' covering 400 km across 17 districts was an inspiration from the historic Dandi March. The idea was to spread the message of peace and non-violence, he pointed out.

The Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Sunil Dutt, would formally flag off the `yatra' on April 22. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, would participate in the concluding programme scheduled at Bapu Ghat in Hyderabad on May 9.

AICC leaders -- Ambika Soni, Digvijay Singh, Motilal Vora, Jeyakumar and Mukul Wasnik -- would participate in the `yatra' during one of the days. Social activists like Shanta Sinha, Swami Agnivesh, freedom fighter, Nirmala Deshpande besides present and former vice-chancellors of universities would participate in the `yatra'.

It would cover Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Medak, Warangal, Khammam, East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Prakasam, Guntur, Kurnool, Anantapur and Mahabubnagar.

Public meetings

The APCC president would also address public meetings at places like Indervelli in Adilabad district, the birthplace of Alluri Seetarama Raju at Pandranki in Padmanabha mandal of Visakhapatnam district.

A rally and a public meeting had been planned at Penukonda mandal headquarters, where bye-election would be held shortly.
