Ban on dance bars

Coming close on the heels of the drive against illegal slums, the Maharashtra Government's ban on dance bars in Mumbai and the rest of the State is laudable. The Government must now take up rehabilitative programmes for the bar girls.

Eradication of the sex trade was ostensibly the main objective of the ban on the dance bars in the State. However, when the red-light district of Kamatipura continues to flourish in a part of Mumbai, such claims sound hollow.
