Musharraf visit

Unlike the failed outcome of the Agra summit four years ago, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's interaction with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh this time has been forward-looking. Whatever be the methods employed, peace should prevail.

The assertion by Gen. Musharraf and Dr. Singh that "they would not allow terrorism to impede the peace process" is heartening. The process needs to be carried forward at various levels until the two leaders meet again.

Dr. Singh has said unequivocally that the peace process is "now irreversible" (April 19). Any hawkish tendencies in the "opinion-moulding" circles on both sides should be curbed.

At a press conference in New Delhi, President Musharraf correctly said that trade and commerce were now the primary issues of relevance. A strong South Asia can only become a reality if there is lasting peace between the two neighbours.
