STATE Bank of India has opened its first branch in the Lakshadweep island of Kavaratti.

Inaugurating the branch, Mr Madhup Vyas, Collector-cum-Development Commissioner, expressed his happiness about the entry of the largest public sector bank into the Union Territory. He expressed optimism that the branch would trigger overall economic development in the islands and would play a pivotal role in developing small-scale industries in these islands.

Presiding over the function, Mr Deepak Chawla, Chief General Manager of SBI, Kerala, promised that all products and services of the bank would be made available to the residents. The branch would also give special thrust to various Government-sponsored schemes and other developmental activities.

The Kavaratti branch, with an ATM counter in the bank premises itself, is linked to the core banking solution network of the bank, giving customers access to the 1,500 networked branches of the bank across the country.
