Gursharan Singh benefit match

NEW DELHI: Top cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, V. V. S. Laxman, M. S. Dhoni, Anil Kumble, Yuvraj Singh, Mohd. Kaif will be seen in action at the Gursharan Singh benefit match at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here on Tuesday.

The match will be played between Tendulkar XI and either Ganguly XI or Dravid XI to raise funds for the veteran cricketer. Doordarshan will telecast the match live. Harbhajan Singh, S. Sriram, Murali Karthik, Irfan Pathan, Ashish Nehra and Gautam Gambhir have also confirmed their participation.

Gursharan Singh played one Test, against New Zealand in Auckland in 1990 series, and a one-day international against Australia at Hamilton. He played first-class cricket for 15 years and holds a world record of maximum catches — four — as the 12th man in Ahmedabad Test against the West Indies in 1984.

Gursharan played 71 Ranji Trophy matches scoring 4,053 runs at an average of 46.70 with 12 centuries and 21 half-centuries. His highest score was 298 not out against Bengal in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals at the Eden Gardens in 1989. He captained Punjab to its only Ranji Trophy triumph so far.
