Non-cooperation of auto drivers

Sir, — One of the biggest problems faced by residents of Bilekahalli, off Bannerghatta Road, is that autorickshaw drivers refuse to ply to this part of the city. Some people have to walk for nearly two km to BTM Layout and take an autorickshaw from there. Will the police to put an end to this problem and ensure that the residents do not face hardships due to the non-cooperation of autorickshaw drivers.

Regulate lotteries

Sir, — The Minister for Small Savings and Lotteries, Basavaraj Horatti, has gone on record that the Government is planning to ban all lotteries in six months. Such a move is not welcome as it will lead to proliferation of illegal lotteries.

It will be more prudent to regulate all lotteries in the State.

Lotteries is a Central subject and the State Government should pressure the Union Government to initiate regulatory measures. Lotteries promoted by various States offer a price payout of over 90 per cent.

This not only encourages reckless gambling, but also defeats the purpose of funding social causes using these funds. The Centre should impose a cap on the price pool at about 80 per cent and fix a ceiling on the number of draws that can be held each day.

Withdraw borewell cess

Sir, — The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) introduced the borewell cess on householders without any notice. It appears strange that the cess is for the use of sanitary lines by the owner.

In fact, BWSSB should give people a rebate for not using water supplied by the board. The cess should be withdrawn immediately and the money that has already been collected should be adjusted against the next bill. Let there be a debate on whether or not people using borewells should be charged a fee for extracting groundwater that is public property.

Information on BMTC routes

Sir, — Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) runs a number of bus services on the Outer Ring Road through the Kalyan Nagar Bus Terminus.

But no information is available at the terminus about the routes, destination and frequency of service. The BMTC authorities are requested to put up information boards at the terminus.

Metro Rail project

Sir, — Spending money on ambitious projects such as Metro Rail should be widely publicised in the electronic and the print media to allow for constructive suggestions from the people.

Non-governmental and civic and trade organisations should be invited to attend seminars on the implementation of the project.

This ensures healthy interaction between the people and the Government.

If people are encouraged to participate in meaningful debates, it will only aid the effective implementation of such projects.
