Second phase of yatra launched from naxalite-hit Kondapak

SIDDIPET: The second phase of the Gandhi Shanti Yatra by the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, K. Keshava Rao, began in naxal-affected Kondapak mandal of Medak district on Monday amid tight security. The yatra passed through areas close to Giraipalli village, a stronghold of the CPI (Maoist).

Dr. Rao began his walk at Kondapak and covered Sirisingandla, Marpadaga and Ponnala on his way to Siddipet. However, his visit to Dammakkapalli near Giraipalli was cancelled for security reasons. He spoke to the press in Sirisinagandla where he made it clear that no miracles could be expected from the yatra. It would, however, help people realise the futility of violence.

Without naming any group the APCC chief asked, "Who gave you the right to kill when you cannot give life?"

Later, addressing the gathering in Marpadaga, he called on the NSUI and other student wings to spread the word on his behalf. He also talked about different kinds of violence perpetrated by the mafia and factionists in the State. He asked all warring groups to follow the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.

While Dr. Keshava Rao could cover two villages in the pre-lunch session, the evening session was hit by unexpected rain and winds. He was was forced to travel in a jeep for a while. He resumed his walk from Ponnala. He addressed a public meeting at the Siddipet Ambedkar's centre.
