NEW DELHI: S.R. Bindu of Kerala won the 800 metres in an encouraging 2:16.90 on the opening day of the two-day World Athletics Day meet at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday. With units responding rather disinterestedly towards this meet, promoted by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), there were thin fields in most of the events as the under-18 boys and girls went through their paces on a steaming hot afternoon. In the event, the participants comprised, in the main, junior campers and local athletes Arvind Kumar Yadav of Uttar Pradesh was a fluent winner in the boys 1500m while Hargovind Rao of Maharashtra took the boys sprint title. Bharatinder Singh of Haryana was the lone boy to cross seven metres in long jump. The results: Boys: 100m: 1. Hargovind Rai (Mah) 11.15s, 2. Deepak Basarwadkar (Mah) 11.16s, 3. Vijay Chaudhary (UP) 6.15, 3. Girijesh Sahney (Del) 6.03; Shot put: 1. Ashwini Solanki (Del) 16.85m, 2. Pradeep Kumar (Har) 16.09, 3. Samarjeet Singh (Raj) 15.98. Girls: 100m: 1. M. Komal (Del) 13.72s, 2. Tania Joshi (Del) 13.88, 3. Prachi Roy (Del) 14.02; 800m: 1. S.R. Bindu (Ker) 2:16.90, 2. Alka Kaur (Del) 2:28.65, 3. Neha Nissar (Del) 2:28.79; long jump: 1. P. K.
