Ernakulam, Kottayam take the honours

KOCHI: Host Ernakulam, with 178 points, claimed the overall championship title in the 49th State senior athletic meet which concluded at the Jawaharlal Nehru international stadium here on Sunday.

Pathanamthitta was second with 141 points ahead of last year's champion Kottayam (116).

Ernakulam also took the men's team title with a tally of 139 points while Kottayam pipped Pathanamthitta by a single point (95 to 94) to take the top honours in the women's section.

However, like on Saturday, the day's proceedings remained low-key and were bereft of any records. The lone highlight of the otherwise disappointing day was the sprint double which K.K. Biju (Ernakulam) completed in the men's section. The winner of the 100m gold yesterday, Biju pocketed the 200m this afternoon as he finished comfortably ahead of V. Girish (Thiruvananthapuram) and teammate B. Prasad.

The GCDA chairman, Antony Issac, who was the chief guest at the closing ceremony, gave away the trophies.
