Environment Day celebrations

MYSORE: The Mysore zoo is organising a host of programmes on June 5 to mark Environment Day to create awareness about wildlife conservation.

A press release from the Executive Director of the zoo said a drawing competition for physically challenged and special children, planting of saplings, a plastic eradication campaign and an awareness programme for housewives will be held as part of the Environment Day celebrations.

Interested persons may register their names with the zoo authorities by May 31. — Staff Correspondent.

Award for principal

MYSORE: The Principal of Government Medical College, Mysore, K. Raghothama Rao, has been conferred with the Bharatiya Shikshana Rathna Award 2004 instituted by the "Nations Economic for Health and Educational Growth."

A press release from Mysore Medical College said Dr. Rao is scheduled to receive the award at a function to be held at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on Monday. — Staff Correspondent.

Free health camp

MYSORE: A free health check-up camp has been organised at Bharath Diagnostic Centre, Irwin Road, here from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

A press statement from the centre said patients suffering from headache, fever, pain in the abdomen and swelling or lump in any part of the body may attend the camp.

Three youths killed

in accident

Tumkur: Three youths from Peenya Industrial Area in Bangalore were killed and three were injured when a van by which they were travelling hit a JCB earth extraction machine at Sheetakalpalya on Tumkur-Madhugiri Road early on Sunday.

The youths were among the 12-member group going in the van to attend the marriage of their friend at Jetti Agrahara, a few km away from the accident spot. The van, it is said, hit the machine from behind.

The three youths died on the spot. The police gave their names as Mallikarjuna, Ramesh and Gururaj.

The post-mortem was conducted at the General Hospital here.

Three of the nine injured were brought to the hospital here.

Their names were given as S. Girish (13), Srinivasa Murthy (13) and B.R. Somesh (23).

Appointed BSP State Secretary

Bidar: Syed Wahid Lakhan has been appointed Bahujan Samaj Party State unit Secretary.

Zahir Anwar Saab has been appointed president of Bidar district unit at a recent meeting of the party. The State unit General Secretary, Chandrakanth Gaddagi, the Gulbarga district president, Suryakant Nimbalkar, and the district general secretary, Baburao Kumbarwada, were present, said a release. — Staff Correspondent

CPI campaign

against VAT

Bidar: The Communist Party of India will launch a nationwide agitation campaign against Value Added Tax (VAT) from May 16 to 27. "VAT is a form of destructive tax introduced following pressure from the World Trade Organisation. This will totally destroy petty trade and deprive millions of people of their livelihood. People should join hands to oppose this anti-people tax," said a release by the party district secretary, Baburao Honna. — Staff Correspondent

BJP to file PIL

MANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party will file a public interest litigation (PIL) petition against the alleged move of the Union Petroleum Minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar, to shift the ONGC-sponsored Coastal Special Economic Zone from Mangalore to Chennai.

Disclosing this to presspersons here on Sunday, the Mangalore MP, D.V. Sadananda Gowda, stated that he was "convinced" that Mr. Aiyar had no intention of promoting the Coastal SEZ in Mangalore and was involved in a "double game" with the Karnataka Government to shift the SEZ to Chennai. However, Mr. Gowda appreciated the role played by the State Governmentin thwarting the efforts of Mr. Aiyar. — Staff Correspondent

Award for LRDE scientists

Bangalore: The "Natural Resource Defence Council Technology Day Meritorious Award 2005" for developing "low sidelobe microstrip antenna array for man portable radar" has been awarded to U.K. Revankar and K.S. Beena Mol, scientists at the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE).

The antenna has been integrated with the radar developed by LRDE. Bharat Electronics Limited is producing and supplying the radar to the Army. — Staff Reporter

Interest waiver

Bidar: Farmers can avail themselves of the benefits of a one-time interest and penal interest waiver scheme of the State Government.

The scheme is available for loans taken up to March 31, 2004. Interest and penal interest on crop and crop-related loans will be waived for farmers who pay only the principal amount of instalments pending up to March 31, 2005.

The last date for paying the instalments is June 30.

The State Government has made a budgetary allocation of Rs. 450 crores for the purpose. This scheme will not be extended further, said a release by the Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, M.D. Mathpati.

`Cultural programmes important'

BELLARY: R. Nagesh, film director and former Chairman of the Karnataka Natak Academy, said here that cultural programmes are necessary to lead the youth along the right path.

He was speaking after inaugurating the "Samskrutika Janotsava," a two-day cultural programme organised by Srujana Cultural Society and the All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) at Gandhi Bhavan here on Saturday.

K. Uma of the State Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) was the chief guest. Radhakrishna, convenor of the organisation, presided.

`Quality of roadwork not good'

Bidar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that the construction of the Bidar-Srirangapattana State Highway is of very low quality.

The General Secretary of the district unit, Shivanand Manthalkar, said a release that the road was not well planned even though the Government had spent a lot of money on it. Even bridges are not of good quality.

The Minister in charge of the district, Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli, and other people's representatives should ensure that quality work is undertaken, Mr. Manthalkar said in a release. — Staff Correspondent

Gram panchayat secretary suspended

Bidar: Govindrao, secretary of the Byalahalli Gram Panchayat, has been suspended on the charge of dereliction of duty and negligence.

The Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, Antony Mendonca, suspended the official, pending inquiry, after gram panchayat members complained that he has been indifferent to the water scarcity in the village.

A preliminary inquiry by the taluk panchayat found Mr. Govindrao was absent from gram panchayat meeting.

Ganja seized

Bidar: The police seized 5.3 quintals of ganja worth Rs. 7.78 lakh from a lorry on the Mumbai-Hyderabad National Highway near Humnabad on Friday. Acting on information that a lorry was carrying ganja, the police intercepted it and arrested 12 persons including six women. The accused have been remanded in judicial custody. A case has been registered in the Humnabad police station.

Bidar: A seminar of the Scheduled Caste Holiya community will be held in Bidar on May 29. Experts will discuss issues relating to the emancipation of deprived communities, need for providing reservation for different sub-castes among Scheduled Castes, said a release from the Karnataka Rajya Chalavadi Sangha.

Hooch destroyed

HUBLI: Excise officials on Friday destroyed hooch and raw material worth Rs. 22,000 used in brewing it at Tadasinakoppa in Dharwad taluk. The officials conducted raids based on a tip off that hooch is being brewed on the outskirts of Tadasinakoppa . — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

Hubli: The Police have arrested one of the seven accused of assaulting a cable operator here last week.

The name of the arrested has been given as Manju Chalavadi. The accused had allegedly assaulted Shabbir and escaped. — Special Correspondent
