KAKINADA: The Kakinada Rate-payers' Association, Citizens' Forum, Consumers' Council and Telephone Users' Association have condemned the proposal of the State Government to permit ship-breaking units here "as it will have disastrous consequences on the marine ecosystem besides leading to many social and economic problems."

In a statement issued here on Monday, Mr P.S.R.K Thimmaji Rao, President of the Kakinada Rate-payers' Association, said the organisations had met on Sunday evening and passed a resolution to that effect.

He said several experts in the field besides the environmental organisation, Green Peace, had opposed the move and it would not be wise to allow the activity here.

Mr M. Pallam Raju, member of the Lok Sabha from Kakinada, had also expressed himself against it, he said. If the Government did not heed to the public opinion, the organisations would seek recourse to the law, added Mr. Thimmaji Rao (also a senior lawyer).
