Bangalore University to set up cell for backward classes

Syndicate to issue show cause notices to 30 teachers

BANGALORE: The Syndicate of Bangalore University (BU) on Tuesday resolved to constitute a backward class cell to look after admission of backward class students and the welfare of teaching and non-teaching faculty belonging to those communities in the university.

This is based on a recommendation made by the Backward Classes Commission.

The university has a Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Cell to look after admission and welfare of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students, teaching and non-teaching faculty.

Eighteen per cent of admissions are reserved for students from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and 32 per cent for students from the backward classes .

Notice to teachers

The Syndicate also decided to issue show cause notices to 30 teachers of the university and affiliated colleges for refusing to do examination work.

Under the Karnataka State University Act, 2000, all teachers have to do examination work, if they refuse they are liable to be punished, including imprisonment up to three years.

The registrar of evaluations has been trying to persuade these teachers to take up examination work for the past three months. Poor response from teachers is delaying the announcement of results, syndicate members said.

MoUs

Bangalore University also entered into memorandums of understanding with universities in China and France today.

The university will develop the syllabus, look into admissions and conduct examinations for BE and ME in information technology and software engineering for universities in China.

The university has also signed memorandum of understanding with the city's University Law College and the University of Manterre in Paris for exchange of students and staff.
