International museum week begins

TIRUPATI: The `International Museum Week' celebrations began at the Regional Science Centre (RSC) here on Tuesday. The centre, working under the National Council of Science Museums, is conducting the event in collaboration with Rotary Club of Tirupati. The Rotary Club , Purushottam Patel, was the chief guest. A novel `Radio science quiz' was organised on AIR's Tirupati FM station. A set of 10 questions were posed during this slot, for which the listeners will have to send the correct answers over a post card to the RSC's Project Coordinator before May 23.

An essay writing contest on `Science - In the service of mankind' will be held on Thursday at 4.30 p.m.

BJYM seeks probe into 'misuse of funds'

CUDDAPAH: BJYM activists staged dharna before the Collectorate on Wednesday demanding an enquiry into alleged irregularities in Rajiv Yuva Shakthi scheme. Addressing activists, the BJYM State President, Pradeep Kumar, alleged that RYS merely benefited Congressmen and fund misuse was rampant. He demanded recruitment of teachers through DSC and sanction of BC scholarships. The State BJYM general secretary, V. Anjan Kumar Goud, the BJYM district president, Sasibhushan Reddy, the BJP district president, K.V. Ramana Reddy, and other leaders also participated in the dharna.- Staff Reporter

Professor donates Rs. 7 lakhs for school

KURNOOL: Dr. A. Ranga Reddy, professor of Economics at Sri Venkateswara University, donated Rs. 7 lakhs for the setting up of an English Medium School in his native village, Konganapadu, in Kurnool district. The school was formally inaugurated on Wednesday. Dr. Ranga Reddy said despite the support for Telugu language, the students who studied in mother tongue faced several problems because of lack of command over English. Nominal fee would be collected from children and the institution would be run on no-profit-no-loss basis, he said.- Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Harpreet Singh, Secretary to the Vigilance Commissioner, has been posted as Secretary, Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission.

He replaces Adhar Sinha who has been transferred and posted as Managing Director of Andhra Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation. Bhanwarlal, who was holding full additional charge, has been relieved with immediate effect, according to an official press note issued here on Wednesday. __Staff Reporter

Man shot dead by naxals

ONGOLE : Activists belonging to the CPI (Maoist) shot dead Mohiddeen Saheb,50, at J. Pullalacheruvu village in Ardhaveedu mandal in Prakasam district late on Tuesday night, branding him a police informer. Two naxalites came to his house around 9 p.m. and shot him dead after making some inquiries.

Speaking to newspersons over telephone, Nallamala East Area committee secretary, Sagar, claimed responsibility for killing. He alleged that Mohiddeen Saheb had provided vital information to the police about dalam movements, leading to the encounter at J. Pullalacheruvu village on January 8.__Special Correspondent

CJI offers prayers

TIRUMALA: The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, R.C. Lahoti, has offered prayers in the temple of Lord Venkateswara, Tirumala, along with his family members.

Justice Lahoti, who reached Tirumala late in the night on Tuesday, stayed overnight in the temple town and offered prayers in the small hours of Wednesday. On his arrival at the temple complex, Justice Lahoti was received with the temple honours and was accorded into the sanctum sanctorum. __Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD: A petty clash between two youths at a borewell for water in Bibipet village of Domakonda mandal resulted in the instantaneous death of a youngster.

The victim, Abdul Rabbani, 38, and Vadla Ramana of the same village clashed over water late on Tuesday night. Annoyed by Rabbani's comments Ramana strongly pushed him down. As a result, Rabbani who fell on hard soil died on the spot. Rabbani is survived by wife, Safila Begum, a son and two daughters. The victim's relatives held a dharna with the body in front of Ramana's house demanding compensation. __Staff Reporter

Man thrown out of

hotel falls to death

Sangareddy : Mohammad Sharif, 21, resident of Gollakheri of Sadasivapet, died of head injury when he was thrown out of the hotel for not paying the bill. According to the police, Sharif had a tiff over payment of bill at the local Parvaz hotel. The hotel manager, Mohammad Yadulla, and three other workers forced him out of the hotel. In the scuffle that ensued, Sharif fell on the ground and died. __Staff Reporter

Mother poisons children, ends life KURNOOL: In a suicide pact, a mother and her three children committed suicide at Gonegandla in Kurnool district on Tuesday night. According to reports, Chittemma gave birth to three girls who were mentally retarded. Frustrated by the health condition of her children, she gave poison to Madhavi (6), Kondamma (4) and a three-month old baby and later she consumed it herself. Kinnerasani sanctuary

KHAMMAM: Despite their shrinking habitat, tigers in Kinnerasani wildlife sanctuary are safe. The sanctuary has in all three tigers and eight panthers with three cubs as per the just concluded census. There is marginal increase in panther population. They have been spotted even in the buffer area of the sanctuary.__Staff Reporter
