`Dalit Chaitanya Yatras' from June 2 to 8

HYDERABAD: The Mala Mahanadu will organise `Dalit Chaitanya Yatras' in the State from June 2 to 8.

P.V. Rao, president of the association, said in a press release on Wednesday that on June 9 `Dalit unity rallies' would be taken out in all mandal centres.

Memoranda would be submitted to MROs listing demands. The association's future programmes would be decided at the State executive meeting here on June 12, he said. - Staff Reporter

Dies after consuming spurious toddy

Sangareddy: One person died and some 24 others were taken after consuming spurious toddy at a shop on the outskirts of Zaheerabad town on Wednesday.

According to V. Raghu, Zaheerabad SI, some of the villagers started vomiting and fell unconscious.

They were rushed to the local Government Hospital, where Potharam Sayappa (45) died. Twelve others were sent to Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad and an equal number of persons were being treated at Zaheerabad. - Staff Reporter

Claymore mines recovered

VISAKHAPATNAM: The police on Wednesday recovered two claymore mines planted by Maoists on the road between Nerellabanda and Garikabanda in the agency mandal of G.K. Veedhi.

The mines were identified and defused at around 1 p.m.

The Additional Superintendent of Police, Narsipatnam, Vineet Brijlal, said that planting mines on a road frequently used by people could lead to civilian casualties.

WARANGAL: K. Sudhakar Reddy, noted doctor in the city, was elected vice-president of the national unit of Indian Medical Association.

Arrack sachets seized, two arrested

ANANTAPUR: Some 10,500 arrack sachets being smuggled into the district from neighbouring Karnataka were seized by Excise sleuths near Rayadurg on Wednesday. Two persons were arrested in this connection. -- Staff Reporter

Two farmers electrocuted

ANANTAPUR: Two farmers were electrocuted in the district on Tuesday night. According to information reaching here, Chinna Anjinappa (45) was electrocuted when he tried to switch on the pumpset in his fields at Pedda Polepalli village of Roddam mandal. At B. Kothapalli village in Bukkaraya Samudram mandal, Narayanaswamy (45) was electrocuted when he came in contact with live wires accidentally. -- Staff Reporter

Swearing in of additional

judges today

HYDERABAD: Five newly appointed additional Judges of the High Court will be sworn in on Thursday at 10.50 a.m. in the court hall of the Chief Justice.

Of these five new appointees in whose names warrants have been issued, two are practising advocates of the High Court and three have had long innings as Judicial Officers. - Legal Correspondent

Directive to DEOs

HYDERABAD: The Government issued orders on Tuesday directing the Director of School Education and DEOs to pay salaries every month to DPEP teachers. This was stated here on Wednesday by the Andhra Pradesh Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union president, B. Mohan Reddy, and the general secretary, P. House destroyed

in fire

NELLORE: Property worth more than Rs. 15,000 was destroyed when a house was gutted in Allipuram area on the outskirts of Nellore town on Wednesday. Fire tenders from Nellore rushed and put out the fire, which was said to be due to short circuit of electricity. At Butchireddipalem town haystacks worth Rs. 3,000 were lost due to same reason. - Staff Reporter

Lorry seized

NELLORE: The revenue authorities in Sydapuram mandal have seized a lorry transporting coal, allegedly without any records at Tummalatalupuru village. Based on a tip-off, the officials rushed to a mica mine where the loading was taking place. The cost of coal was said to be around Rs. 20,000. - Staff Reporter

Contract drivers

for RTC

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati region of APSRTC is planning to recruit 203 drivers on contract basis to be deputed in various routes in the district.

According to the Regional Manager, S.Dharma Reddy, a huge number of applications were received by his office, after duly shortlisting which, call letters were dispatched to 955 candidates on seniority basis.

The selection process would be taken up from May 27 which is expected to go on for a week. - Staff Reporter

NELLORE: An amount of Rs. 33.55 lakhs has been sanctioned to tide over the crisis of drinking water in Kavali sub-division area of Nellore district. This follows a study undertaken by the Rural Water Supply (RWS) Department. The allocation will help a number of villages in about 3 mandals in the sub-division area. -Staff Reporter

DHFL Vysya achieves 159 p.c. growth

TIRUPATI: DHFL Vysya Housing Finance Limited has announced that it has achieved a growth rate of 160 per cent in disbursement of housing loans during the year 2004-05.

The company's Managing Director, R.Nambirajan, has stated in a press release that the turnover of housing loans jumped from Rs.18 crores last year to Rs.46.65 crores, recording a growth of 159 p.c. - Staff Reporter
