Back Scientific research

It is heartening to read that the well-known chemistry professor, Dr C. N. R. Rao has won the $1-million Dan David Prize for his contribution to material sciences.

Dr Rao has expressed hope that the award will inspire young Indian scientists and encourage them to take on research in their own country. He said, "I always wanted to stay and work in India."

Scientific research in India is at a nadir, particularly in pure sciences. Not many Indians are interested in research in basic sciences.

Dr Rao must be congratulated for his sustained interest in the field. It is to be hoped that his dream of more Indians taking to research and doing pioneering work in India will come true.
