New Delhi , May 27

UNSHREDDED metallic scrap can now be imported through Inland Container Depot (ICD) Mulund, making this the 22nd eligible port for such imports.

The Government had last year revamped the import policy on metallic scrap and stipulated that metallic scrap in unshredded form can be imported only through 15 designated ports of the country.

The port restrictions had since been relaxed in the wake of the congestion situation at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).

The Government has now further modified the port restriction by allowing metallic scrap in unshredded and loose forms to be imported through ICD Mulund, official sources said.

About 92 per cent of the metallic scrap imported (in volume terms) into the country is in unshredded form.

Metallic ferrous ores and metallic scrap imports during 2003-04 stood at Rs 5,746 crore (Rs 5,022 crore during 2002-03).

The ports that have been already designated for imports of metallic scrap in unshredded form are Chennai, Kochi, Ennore, JNPT, Kandla, Mormugao, Mumbai, New Mangalore, Paradip, Tuticorin, Vishakapatnam, ICD Tughlakabad, Pipava, Mundra, Kolkata, ICD Ludhiana, ICD Dadri, ICD Nagpur, ICD Jodhpur, ICD Jaipur and ICD Udaipur.
