Discussion on metro railway KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTH: The Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) represented by its Managing director, E. Sreedharan, and Babu Jacob, advisor to the State Government, today held discussions regarding the funding for the Kochi Metro railway project. No decision was taken after the discussion on the means and ways to raise the project cost of Rs.2500 crores. The technical report for the Kochi project will be submitted by June end. The DMRC has also forwarded a proposal for widening the road along the Tripunithura-Vyttila sector, as the road width is insufficient for setting up the pillars required for the project. — Staff Reporter.

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTH: The Cartoon Seminar Fest 2005, organised by Kerala Cartoon Academy, concluded at Lalitkala Akademi Art Gallery here on Monday. Antony Isaac, Chairman, Greater Cochin Development Authority, inaugurated the valedictory session. Seminars on `good cartoon in my perception' and `cartooning in digital age' were held on the last day of the three-day fest. Senior cartoonist Kerala Varma, known as Kevy, who turned 80, was honoured on Sunday. The District Collector, A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, draped a ponnada on Mr. Varma and writer K.L. Mohana Varma spoke. A collection of Kevy's works, Crazy Cartoons, was also released on the occasion. — Staff Reporter.

Bhoomimitra Award announced

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTH: Kannur-based `One Planet One Life' has been selected for this year's Bhoomimitra award, instituted by Paristhiti Samrakshana Sanghom, Aluva.

The award will be presented at the World Environment Day celebrations to be held at Federal Bank Officers' Association Hall, Aluva on June 5. Minister for Fisheries and Sports, Dominic Presentation, will inaugurate the celebrations and K.S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, will present the award. — Staff Reporter.

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTH: Applications have been invited for a temporary vacancy of a project assistant in one of the ongoing projects, Water quality assessment in the tsunami affected coastal areas of Kerala, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India in the School of Environmental Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology.

Minimum qualification for the post is a Master's Degree in Environmental Science or Chemistry and two years' research experience in water quality analysis. Field experience is a desirable qualification. Selected candidate will get a stipend of Rs.5000.

KWA to start spot billing

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTH: The Kerala Water Authority's Public Health Division will start the spot billing system for water tax for all consumers under its Palayam division from June, a press release issued by KWA executive engineer has said. — Staff Reporter

Baby in `Amma' cradle

Thiruvananthapuram: A week-old girl baby, weighing 2.5 kg, was found abandoned in the `Amma' electronic cradle installed at the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare in the early hours on Sunday. This is the 44th baby to be found in the cradle. Any claimants for the infant should get in touch with the Council's administrator.

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTH: The Kerala State Youth Welfare Board is organising a mass run on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on Tuesday, to spread the message on the harmful effects of tobacco on health. The Transport Minister, N. Sakthan, will flag off the mass run from Museum grounds at 8 a.m. in which over 200 persons are expected to take part. The mass run will conclude at Gandhi park grounds where the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, A.P. Anil Kumar, will address a public meeting. — Staff Reporter

Mega Lok adalat

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTH: Indian Overseas Bank and Chirayinkeezh Taluk Legal Services Authority jointly conducted a mega lok adalat on May 29 on the MACT court premises, Attingal. About 127 defaulting borrowers attended the adalat wherein 114 cases were settled. — Staff Reporter

Tamil Sangom award

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTH: Thiruvananthapuram Tamil Sangom has instituted an award in the name of Mahakavi Ulloor, for eminent scholars who do meritorious service to Tamil and Malayalam literature. This year's award will be shared by Puthusseri Ramachandran, for his translation of Kulasekhara Alwar's `Perumal Thirumozhi' into Malayalam and K. Nachimuthu for his translation of a Malayalam novel by C. Radhakrishnan into Tamil. The award will be presented on June 5 at a function to be held at the Sangom hall. — Staff Reporter

Financial aid

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTH: The Canara Bank Social Banking Cell has given a financial aid of Rs.1 lakh to `Abhaya,, for digging a borewell at Abhayagramam, a shelter for women and children at Malayinkeezh, run by the poet and social activist Sugathakumari. The bank is also giving an aid of Rs.25,000 and two computers for the organisation. The documents for the same were handed over to Ms. Sugathakumari by the Canara Bank General Manager, Umesh Shenoy, at a function held here on Monday. — Staff Reporter

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMTH: The members of the advisory panel of the Central Board of Film Certification, Thiruvananthapuram region, condoled the death of Kalady Namboothiri at a meeting held here on Monday.
