Back Power reforms

The editorial `Politics of power reforms' (Business Line, June 1) has pointed out that the political opposition to the power sector reforms basically centres around one point — free power to farmers. Since it is related to rural development, employment generation, input subsidy, cross-subsidy, a comprehensive policy is needed.

The basic problem is shortage and increasing demand. The power crisis in many States is a reflection of the failure in planning and execution. There is a need to concentrate on increased production by encouraging conventional energy production, bio-fuel, research and development, and develop new resources.
