Sonia's re-election

One year ago, Sonia Gandhi turned down the post of Prime Minister. Her act was widely described as renunciation. But by becoming Congress president again, she has proved beyond doubt that she is still zealous in taking over the reins. She is only biding her time.

Ms. Gandhi has become the undisputed leader of the Congress because the UPA came to power after the elections in 2004. Her clever move of handing over the Prime Minister's post to Dr. Singh also helped her. Showering bouquets in victory and brickbats in defeat is the mass psychology of Indians. This is only a temporary phase.

Ms. Gandhi has weathered many storms to get to where she has reached. Her immediate task is to induct new talent into the party at all levels. She can succeed only if there is internal democracy in the Congress.

The `Italian bahu' became the saviour of a decimated Congress, which reigned supreme under Jawaharlal Nehru, the chosen man of Gandhiji, to shoulder India's "tryst with destiny." The charisma of Nehru was such that after him the country's destiny became a tryst with the Nehru family. It is a sad reflection on one of the world's greatest democracies.
