Women scribes get award

TIRUPATI: The editorial team of "Navodayam", a monthly magazine run under the aegis of DRDA by and for rural women, has been selected for the `Best woman journalist' award announced by Data News Features Foundation, Hyderabad.

According to the magazine's consultant, B. Kirankumari, the award will be presented by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at Hyderabad Press Club on Thursday. - Staff Reporter

Last date extended

TIRUPATI: The last date for the issue and receipt of applications for SPMVVCET-2005, the entrance test conducted by Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam for admission into M.Sc applied microbiology, biochemistry and biotechnology courses is extended from May 31 to June 6.

The test will be conducted on June 19 as scheduled, a release said. - Staff Reporter

Collector, SP thank people

ANANTAPUR: The District Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, and the Superintendent of Police, R.S. Praveen Kumar, on Thursday expressed their gratitude to the people of Penukonda constituency, the police and security personnel posted for the byelection from different parts of the State and neighbouring States, the political parties, the candidates and the polling personnel for ensuring a free and fair conduct of polling.

Power cut woes

NELLORE: People of Sangam town of Nellore district went without power supply for more than five hours on Wednesday, resulting in acute shortage of drinking water in several areas.

Power supply was restored at about 7 p.m. and the interruption was said to be due to a technical snag in the sub-station.

However, people feel that the cut is part of `unofficial' disconnection of power supply by the authorities. - Staff Reporter

11 arrested

NELLORE: The police in Muttukuru have taken into custody 11 persons in connection with a clash in Vaddipalem village.

The arrests followed complaints from both sections and all of them have been sent to the court. - Staff Reporter

Surprise checks

HYDERABAD: Sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau conducted a surprise check at the Primary Health Centre, Chittammuru mandal of Nellore district and found shortage in 21 types of drugs.

The officials also noticed irregularities in `Sukheebhava' and National Maternity Benefit schemes. The Medical Officer, Dr. N.C. Venkaiah, was also found to have violated budget instructions while spending the amount. - Staff Reporter

All set for LAWCET tomorrow

VISAKHAPATNAM: Hall tickets have been despatched to 16,659 candidates appearing for the Law Common Entrance Test -- 2005 (LAWCET) to be held at 14 centres in the State on June 4.

According to its Convener, R. Venkata Rao, here on Thursday, 13,441 candidates will appear for the admission test for the three-year course and 3,218 for the five-year course. The entrance test for the three-year course will be held from 10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and for the five-year course from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at centres in Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Rajahmundry, Guntur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Tirupati, Cuddapah, Nellore and Anantapur. __Special Correspondent

Cancellation of B.Ed. admissions sought

HYDERABAD: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has sought cancellation of B.Ed. admissions into minority institutions alleging large-scale irregularities. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, V. Narender, city organising secretary, and R. Shashidhar, national executive member said that students who had registered at the DEO offices were being denied admission by the colleges. He wanted the lists at the DEO offices to be verified with the admissions lists of the colleges. __ Staff Reporter

Arms seized in raids, seven arrested

KHAMMAM: The police seized a huge cache of weapons in Aswaraopet and the neighbouring Buttaigudem mandal of West Godavari on Thursday. The Superintendent of Police, Bhavana Saxena, said that 30 SRML weapons were seized and seven persons arrested in the raids conducted by a special party.

All the weapons were locally made and meant for supply to poachers.

She said that the special party combing the area arrested three poachers with four weapons near Kothakannaigudem village. They raided a weapons unit near Buttaigudem and seized 26 guns. Four persons were arrested. __Staff Reporter

Ten companies penalised

HYDERABAD: The First Class Judicial Magistrate has slapped fine on 10 companies for non-compliance of the Employees' State Insurance Act over the last three months.

The companies are --Color & Coats, Balanagar, Sudharshan Saw Miller Timber Merchant, Hema Pen Company, Chaush Housing Works, Ramakrishna Foods (Krishna district), Chandu Bai Jewellers, Hyderabad, Pai's Anand Bhavan, J.V. Tools, Nitin Forgings and Steel Inds and Satguru Management Consultants, Hyderabad, according to a press release issued by N. Gopalakrishnaiah, Deputy Director of the ESI Corporation.__Staff Reporter

Miraculous escape for bus passengers

NELLORE: Eighty passengers had a miraculous escape when an RTC bus overturned near Yellasiri village of Chittamuru mandal on Wednesday evening. However, nine of them, including the driver and conductor, sustained minor injuries. The mishap occurred when the driver was trying to avoid hitting a scooterist. __Staff Reporter

Two farmers end lives

KARIMNAGAR: Two farmers committed suicide in separate cases on Thursday due to increasing debts and failure of crops. Reports reaching here said that K. Mohan Reddy (44) consumed pesticide in Chelpur village of Huzurabad mandal.

He had incurred debts to the tune of Rs. 2 lakh. J. Pedda Gangaram (52) also consumed pesticide in Allipur village of Raikal mandal. He had debts to the tune of Rs 1.2 lakh. __Staff Reporter
