Dayanidhi Maran to meet Intel chief

CHENNAI: Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran will meet the chairman of Intel, Craig Barrett, during his coming tour of San Francisco, to persuade the company to set up an Advanced Test Manufacturing facility in Chennai.

He will carry forward the agenda of the Ministry, which has been in discussion with Intel for the past eight months on the possibility of setting up the facility in Chennai. Apparently India has been short-listed by it as one of the possible locations along with Vietnam and China.

Mr. Maran will carry to Mr. Barrett a letter from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to impress upon him the benefits that will accrue if they locate their facility in Chennai.

During his visit, between June 5 and 10, Mr. Maran would also have interactions with Hong Liang Lu, Chairman, CEO and President, UT Starcom; John Chambers, CEO, Cisco; Hector Ruiz, CEO and Chairman, AMD; Craig London, Executive Vice-President, Solectron; Kenneth Juster, former U.S. Under-Secretary of Commerce; and Kenneth L. Scroeder, CEO, KLA-Tencor.

He is also scheduled to meet Vicent G. Cerf, chairman, Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers to discuss and promote efficiency in routing Internet traffic within the country as a sequel to the launch of the .in domain. Besides this, he will pitch for major international investments in hardware manufacturing sector with a special focus on job creation.
