GLOBAL Wireless Networks Inc (GWN), a US-based wireless solutions provider, has announced plans to locate its India centre in Hyderabad, which would serve as both a product development and global support centre.

Addressing a press conference here today, the President and CEO of GWN, Mr Jay K. Patel, said, "Wireless networks are growing exponentially, offering huge scope for telecom carriers to tap the data market. But this comes with a few challenges and a wireless solutions provider like us can help them address this with our solutions."

He said that the company would commence its operations from leased premises initially and was negotiating with the State Government to acquire 130 acres of land near the proposed international airport.

Refusing to divulge information on the company's financials, Mr Patel said that the company planned to invest about Rs160 crore for the Hyderabad centre.

"In the US, GWN has filed for a few patents in wireless data interface. Apart from providing services to overseas carriers, we believe there is potential to tap the domestic market. The telecom market in India is projected to grow rapidly where wireless phones are expected to touch 200 million users by 2007, offering scope for a service provider like GWN," he said.
