Two killed as train

hits tractor

KURNOOL: Two persons died when the Nizamuddin-Bangalore express train rammed into a tractor at an unmanned level crossing on the outskirts of the city near Vengannabavi on Thursday noon. The driver, Mallikarjun (26), and another person, Prasad (30), died on the spot.

The tractor engine was dragged along the track for a few hundred meters and was reduced to pieces of mangled metal. The bodies were also badly damaged.

Four killed

in mishap

CUDDAPAH: Four persons were killed when a speeding lorry carrying iron girders ran amuck and hit a stationary sand-laden tractor and then a lorry near Anantharajupet in Kodur mandal on Thursday morning.

The tractor driver, Gampala Changalarayudu, and cleaner, Prem Kumar, who were having tea at a roadside stall were run over by the speeding lorry. The driver of the lorry, Sivaiah, and cleaner, Ramesh Kumar, also died. The Kodur police registered a case.

Sangareddy: Ramanthapuram Bal Reddy (35) and Siddam Raju (30), both labourers working in a clandestine sand digging operation, died on Thursday when the upper layer of a sand mine caved in near Ismailkhanpet in the Sangareddy rural police station limits.

According to the police, the owner of the land has been identified. On the other hand, residents of Ismailkhanpet allege that the police are hand in glove with sand contractors who indulge in illegal sand mining activity in Medak district. - Staff Reporter

hacked to death

KURNOOL: A Congress leader, G. Ankireddy, 35, was hacked to death at Manchalakatta in Gadivemula police station limits of Kurnool district on Thursday.

According to reports, a four-wheeler hit the bike on which Ankireddy and his follower, Mahabub Saheb, were going. After they fell down, the assailants attacked Ankireddy with sickles and killed him on the spot. Mahabub Saheb received injuries. - Staff Reporter

Kidnap charge

Rajahmundry: The Rythu Kooli Sangham leader and president of Rajahmundry Quarry Workers' Union, Bodapati Chantiaih alias Chanti, his son B. Chander Rao, who is a lorry driver and a trade union leader, Mota Venkat Rao, were allegedly kidnapped in the wee hours of Thursday. According to their family members, 20 unidentified persons came to their house and forcibly taken away the three. - Staff Reporter

Former Speaker dead

NELLORE: Rebala Dasaratharami Reddy (98), veteran politician and former Speaker of the State Assembly, popularly known as `RDR', passed away here on Thursday afternoon after a brief illness. The funeral will be held on Friday evening.

CUDDAPAH: Justice K. Punnaiah will address a public meeting here on June 18, organised during the second mahasabha of Kulavivaksha Vyatireka Porata Sangham, the KVPS district secretary, C. Babu, said on Thursday. The KVPS State president, Paturi Ramaiah, and the secretary, John Wesley, will attend the two-day mahasabha, he told a press conference here on Thursday.
