Woman kills daughter, commits suicide

ADILABAD: A woman committed suicide by consuming poison at Timmapur village in Ramakrishnapur mandal on Thursday. She also administered it to her two daughters. While one of her, Niharika (5), died, another daughter Sonia (9) was shifted to Karimnagar hospital where she is out of danger.

According to Ramakrishnapur Sub-Inspector, Tirupati, the woman, Ch. Bhagya (25), was disturbed over frequent quarrels with her husband. In the morning, he reportedly chided his wife for causing damage to a mobile phone instrument. This allegedly forced her to resorting to the extreme step. - Staff Reporter

Probe into tower collapse

HYDERABAD: The Government has ordered an inquiry into the collapse of a tower of the 220-KV transmission line connecting Kothagudem Thermal Power Station and Budidampadu, both in Khammam district, on Wednesday.

C. Vijaya Kumar, chief electrical inspector to Government, will conduct the probe, fixing responsibility for the lapses, if any. What prompted the Government to opt for the probe was that the tower was restored recently after it collapsed last month. - Staff Reporter

Three die in suicide pact

KURNOOL: In a suicide pact, a couple and their widowed daughter committed suicide unable to support themselves at Vengannabavi on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday night.

According to reports, V. Venkata Swamy (70), his wife, Ramakka (60) and their daughter Chinna Seshamma (40) ended their lives by consuming pesticide.

The family which lived at Ulindakonda were dejected by the denial of their son and grand-son to support them and decided to end their lives. - Staff Reporter

Varavara Rao's resignation rejected

HYDERABAD: The resignation of Varavara Rao as member of the Andhra Pradesh Revolutionary Writers' Association (Virasam) has been rejected.

G. Kalyana Rao, president of the association, and former Maoist emissary at the talks with the Government, said in a press release on Thursday that it wished that Varavara Rao continued in Virasam.

He described Rao's association with the organisation as long-standing since he was one of the founders. - Staff Reporter

Rice seized

CUDDAPAH: The Ramapuram police arrested six persons and seized 255 bags of rice meant for the National Food For Work Programme and the lorry used to transport it near Kasireddigaripalle village in Ramapuram mandal on Thursday.

The seized rice is worth Rs. 1.30 lakhs, according to the Ramapuram Sub-Inspector, Ramakrishnudu, who made the seizure. - Staff Reporter

Gas cylinder

explodes

ELURU: The blast of a cooking gas cylinder rendered eight families homeless at Turupuveedhi here on Thursday. The members of all the affected families, however, had a miraculous escape.

According to the police, leakage of gas was the cause for the blast. The blast was so devastating that the tiled roofs were tossed into the air and the house walls badly damaged. All the victims were the poor eking out their living by doing menial jobs. - Staff Reporter

Trader robbed

KURNOOL: A rice-trader, Jagadeeswar Reddy, was robbed of Rs. 10.77 lakhs on the outskirts of Nandyal town in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to reports, Jagadeeswara Reddy, who was going on a bike with a cash bag, was waylaid by a gang snatched the bag from him.

He was proceeding to his native village, Pedda Kottala near Mahanandi when the robbery occurred. - Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: The list of non-teaching employees due for transfers was displayed according to their seniority station-wise, according to a press note issued by the District Educational Officer, B.J. Website on Kurnool

KURNOOL: The District Infomatic Centre developed a website on Kurnool district, which was launched by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, during his visit recently. The site contains information on history, tourist centres, agriculture, literacy and health. The site also planned to provide on-line marketing provision for self-help groups. Engineer in ACB net

HYDERABAD: An Assistant Engineer of Panchayat Raj Department, A. Masthan Reddy, working in Nandyal of Kurnool district was arrested on charge of accepting Rs. 15,000 bribe by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Thursday. The engineer had allegedly demanded bribe for clearing a file pertaining to a road laying work executed by a contractor. Reddy tested positive when subjected to a chemical test, a press release said. He would be produced in the court of Additional Special Judge for ACB Cases, Hyderabad. - Staff Reporter

B.Ed. course for hearing impaired

CUDDAPAH: The Helen Keller's Training College for Teachers of the Deaf has invited applications for B.Ed. (Special Education) through distance education by June 30. Any physically challenged graduate having passed the bridge course in hearing impairment, Diploma in Special Education (Hearing Impaired) or Diploma in Education (Deaf) teacher training course or Foundation Course in Special Education, having two years' teaching experience in recognised special schools for the deaf are eligible, its Principal-cum-Coordinator, P. Dowlat Khan, said on Thursday. Applicants should enclose a demand draft for Rs. 200 and a self-addressed envelope of 30 by 25 cms size bearing stamps of Rs. 50, he said. - Staff Reporter

Women killed in mishap

NELLORE: A 60-year old woman was fatally knocked down by a lorry at Kodavalur town on Wednesday night. The incident occurred when she was crossing the road, resulting in her instantaneous death. The deceased has been identified as T. Koteswaramma, belonging to Kammapalem village. Police are enquiring. - Staff Reporter
