Back Need to amend labour laws, says ILO member Our Bureau
Mangalore , June 22 THERE is a need to amend our labour laws, especially considering the boom in the outsourcing sector, said Mr N.M. Adyanthaya, member of the governing body of International Labour Organisation (ILO). Addressing newspersons here on Wednesday, he said that though the outsourcing sector provides employment opportunities to many people, most employees in the sector do not enjoy the benefits that a permanent employee is entitled to. Hence, there is a need to amend labour laws. Mr Adyanthaya, who is the Secretary of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (Intuc), was elected member of the ILO governing body at Geneva on June 6. He said that the recently concluded 93rd annual ILO conference has decided to form an expert committee to look into employment generation for youth across the world. Stating that nearly two million workers are dying every year, the world over, due to work-related problems, he said that it was decided at the meeting to formulate a plan to tackle this problem. Though the ILO conference could not come out with a convention on fishing sector, Mr Adyanthaya said that a Fisheries Convention would be introduced with some modifications in 2007.
