Affiliation of women's colleges

Sir, — The Government has proposed to set up the State's second women's university at Hassan. The women's colleges of erstwhile Mysore have challenged the Government Order affiliating them to the Karnataka State Women's University, Bijapur. At present, the State has several universities and it will not be prudent to establish the proposed university.

The setting up of more universities will reduce the status, dignity, and sanctity of higher education. The colleges in Tumkur district, numbering less than 50, have been affiliated to the recently established Tumkur University. The women's colleges of old Mysore may be affiliated to Tumkur University.

Maintenance

Sir, — Despite the collection of entry fee, the upkeep of Lalbagh is far from satisfactory. People continue to litter the gardens. The security personnel do not ask people to refrain from throwing rubbish all around. The authorities concerned should take steps to ensure that the gardens are well maintained and people do not litter the place.

Added burden

Sir, — The prices of all commodities and vegetables have gone up. The Union Government has also increased fuel prices, which will lead to inflation. This will be an added burden to the common man. The Centre should think of the pros and cons of such a move before enforcing it. Instead of increasing prices whenever there is a hike in the international market, the Government should think of ways of minimising expenditure and wastage.

Headlights

Sir, — I often come across two-wheelers with headlights on during the day and find many "blind" two-wheelers at night. The traffic police must take steps to ensure that all vehicles use headlights at night and enforce a speed limit.

Increase in bus fares

Sir, — The recent increase in bus fares, especially for the second stage, is steep and this will affect senior citizens.

I live near Kormangala Depot No. 15. During peak hours, many commuters, particularly senor citizens, find it difficult to enter the buses as there is a heavy rush.

Most of the Pushpak buses have been lent to firms, and the senior citizens are now at the mercy of regular buses. Private bus operators, who have sensed an opportunity, have started charging BMTC fares. I urge the authorities to ensure that the Pushpak bus service is available until 9 p.m. and revise the increase in fares.
