Maoists destroy two liquor shops

ONGOLE: CPI(Maoist) activists destroyed two liquor shops at Hanuman Junction kunta in Pedaaraveedu mandal here on Wednesday night to protest against killing of Janashakti leader Riaz allegedly in a fake encounter. Eight members of the Palavanka dalam, including a woman, descended on the village at 9.30 p.m. and destroyed the shops, which were set up two days ago after getting permission in the open tender system. - Special Correspondent

10 antique idols recovered at Nandyal

KURNOOL: The police recovered 10 idols from a summer storage tank at Nandyal on Thursday. The idols, some of them having antique value, were believed to have been stolen by a gang and were abandoned as it encountered problem during transportation. The police brought the idols and preserved them at Prathama Nandiswara temple in the town. - Staff Reporter

Explosive material seized; three arrested

WARANGAL: The police seized explosive material and arrested three persons near Jangaon while they were illegally transporting the material on Thursday. According to G. Ravinder, SI, they seized 17 boxes of slurry, 3,400 detonators, 50 metre safety fuse wire and 50 kg of ammonium salt while checking the vehicles in the early hours. The arrested persons were S. Headmaster, teacher suspended

ADILABAD: The District Educational Officer (DEO), P.B. Narsinga Rao, on Thursday suspended the headmaster of Tamsi Government High School, G. Chandrashekhar, and the physical education teacher (PET), Saraiah, on the complaint of villagers. The DEO and the rural CI, Mashooque Ali, conducted a preliminary inquiry into the school affairs following reports of fighting among teachers. - Staff Reporter

Paritala case: custody of accused extended

ANANTAPUR: Judicial custody of 12 accused persons in the Paritala Ravindra murder case was extended by another 14 days till July 21 by the Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate's Court here on Thursday. Anjana Sinha made APPA Joint Director

HYDERABAD: The Government has cancelled the transfer of K.R.M. Kishore Kumar as Deputy Inspector-General, Home Guards, and retained him as Joint Director, Andhra Pradesh Police Academy (APPA). Also, Anjana Sinha, who was waiting for an assignment, has been posted as Joint Director, APPA, in the ex-cadre post to be created, according to a press release. - Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: A 10-member delegation of the Bar Council of India, including its former Chairman, D.V. Subba Rao, will be on a nine-day goodwill visit to Pakistan from Monday next.

``The tour is at the invitation of the Pakistan Bar Council, and delegation members will interact with their counterparts in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and Rawalpindi," Mr. Subba Rao said in a statement here on Thursday. - Special Correspondent

Collector inspects school buildings

CHITTOOR: The district Collector, S.S. Rawat, made a surprise visit to the schools here on Thursday to ascertain the condition of the buildings. The Collector found the school buildings in Venkateswara colony and Shanthi Nagar, Kongareddipalli, in a bad shape and instructed the Municipal Commissioner to construct new buildings. At Gandlapalli school, some of the classes were congested and the Collector asked the officials to construct adequate rooms.- Correspondent

50-year-old dies in road mishap

CUDDAPAH: A 50-year-old man, Neeli Subbarayudu alias Yesanna, died and his brother-in-law, Penchalaiah, (52), sustained injuries when the moped on which they were travelling was hit by a tractor at Vinayaknagar here on Thursday. . - Staff Reporter

Rag-picker found dead

ANANTAPUR: A rag -picker, Munindra, (22), was allegedly done to death by miscreants on Wednesday night. According to the police, Munindra, a resident of fish market area near APSRTC bus station was a rag picker. A native of Kalluru village in Pamidi mandal he was married six months ago. His head was found smashed with boulders.- Staff Reporter

Free eye camp conducted

TIRUPATI: The Association for the Social, Educational and Charitable Activities for the poor communities (ASHA), conducted a free eye camp at Renigunta on Thursday. Specialists examined 145 persons and short listed 30 patients for cataract surgery, which would be performed at Navajeevan Eye Hospital.-Staff Reporter

Minister lays stone for kalyanamandapam

Srikakulam: The Minister for Revenue and Rehabilitation, Dharmana Prasada Rao, on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the Rs.56-lakh kalyanamandapam.

The Minister refuted the allegations of TDP leaders that he had done nothing for development of the town pointing out that Rs.36 crores had been sanctioned for various developmental activities.

He listed the works sanctioned which include drainage network and widening of the main road.

Land was also provided for garbage yard which was a long-felt need of the municipality, he claimed. - Special Correspondent

Deadline for VAT return filing

Kakinada: Traders, who registered themselves as TOT dealers under Section 17(7) of Andhra Pradesh VAT Act and are doing a business of Rs. 5 lakhs to Rs.40 lakhs, should file their returns for the tri-monthly business turnover in TOT return form-007 at the commercial taxes office concerned by July 30, according to Y.N.V. Satyanarayana, Deputy Commissioner of Commercial Taxes.

He said on Thursday that traders along with their returns should pay 1 per cent turnover tax on the taxable turnover. - Correspondent
