Back Edible oils import up 27 per cent

EDIBLE oils imports increased by 27 per cent to 30,62,419 tonnes during first eight months of the current oil year (November 2004-June 2005) from 24,03,609 tonnes during the corresponding period last year.

Imports in June 2005 were lower at 2,82,478 tonnes from 3,35,127 tonnes in last June, according to figures available from the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA).

During the period, imports of refined oils were 3,40,152 tonnes. Crude oil import was at 2,72,2267 tonnes. Imports of palm oil products dropped to 20,07,954 tonnes from f 20,27,675 tonnes, while imports of soft oil, mainly soyabean oil shot up to 10,54,465 tonnes from 3,75,934 tonnes previously.

The overall imports of non-edible oils in June 2005 jumped up by 59 per cent to 22,351 tonnes from 14,159 tonnes in June 2004.
