MANGALORE: As many as 41,959 toilets will be constructed in Dakshina Kannada district in the next two years at a cost of Rs. 4.15 crores, A.M. Kunjappa, Chief Executive Officer of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, has said. In all, 3,735 toilets were constructed under the Total Sanitation Campaign by the end of January at a cost of Rs. 1.82 crore, he added. Presiding over a review meeting of the campaign here, he said Rs. 10.37 lakhs has been spent on the construction of 3,278 toilets against the target of 41,019 toilets. Beneficiaries will receive an incentive of Rs. 500 to construct a toilet. A total of 38 community toilets for women have been constructed against the target of 65 toilets, he noted. Noting that Rs. 15.19 lakhs has been spent for the purpose, he said 392 toilets have been constructed in schools against the target of 474 toilets at a cost of Rs. 86.26 lakhs. A sum of Rs. 20,000 has been spent on constructing toilets in schools, he said and added that Rs. 5,000 has been spent on constructing each of the 31 toilets in anganwadis against the target of 401 toilets. Noting that the targets have to be met in the next two years, Mr. Kunjappa directed the heads of government departments to make arrangements in this regard. He also instructed the officials concerned to launch an awareness campaign, especially among rural people, on the need to maintain personal hygiene. The Government has also agreed to recruit people with expertise in community development, human resources development and communication skills to carry on the campaign.
