The following were the rates (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Friday, according to Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil-52.50, palmolein oil-39.50, sunflower oil-50, tamarind (flower variety)-49, tamarind (karipuli variety)-22 to 29, chillies (new)-42 to 47, rice (2716)-13.50, rice (super fine)-15, rice (sona masoori)-17 to 19, rice (samba masoori)-16 to 18, black gram-27 to 28.50 and red gram-26.30 to 31.50. - Staff Reporter

Sanitation works

inspected

The incharge commissioner of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, Buddha Prakash Jyothi, has instructed municipal officials to take steps for ensuring sanitation in view of the rain in the city. He inspected sanitation drive at Bhanunagar, Bose Nagar, Rajeev Nagar and Shantinagar on Thursday. He inquired from the local people about the problem they were facing. Mr. Jyothi said that all steps should be taken to ensure that viral fevers would not break out in the localities. - Staff Reporter

Effigy burnt

The Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad Vijayawada unit has organised a protest programme against commercialisation of education by corporate colleges. ABVP activists burnt an effigy of corporate colleges at Kotta Vantena centre on Thursday.

They raised slogans demanding that the Government regulate corporate colleges and ensure that there was no pressure on students. They deplored that Kumuda, a girl studying in Intermediate at a city corporate college, committed suicide unable to withstand the stress. - Staff Reporter
