A joint meeting of hosiery manufacturers bodies and knit industry workers trade unions was held in Tirupur on Saturday to discuss Friday's Madras High Court order of closure of 660 dyeing and bleaching units in the effluent discharge issue.

The meeting held under the leadership of the South India Hosiery Manufacturers Association (SIHMA) President, Mr Mohan Kandasamy, has decided to appeal to both the Centre and the State Government seeking financial support and extension of time for implementing the system for `zero' discharge of effluents by the dyeing industry to ward off the penal action from the court, the SIHMA sources said.

The meeting also decided to go on delegation, under the leadership of the sitting member of Parliament from Tirupur, to impress upon the Centre the need to give special grant for implementing the advanced pollution control measures. It has also decided to take a delegation to the State Government seeking its intervention in the matter.
