THE Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) has been declared a World Heritage Site by the Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation).

The Indian Railways is making efforts to get this inscription for other mountain railways including the Kalka Shimla Railway, said an official release.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was inscribed as a world heritage site by the Unesco in 1999 and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was inscribed in 2004, the release said.

Application for the Kalka-Shimla Railway is under examination with the Unesco. The railway is expected to be considered by the World Heritage Committee next year, stated the Railway Ministry. Besides these, other mountain railways such as Neral-Matheran near Mumbai and the Kangra Valley Railway (Joginder-Nagar-Pathankot) have unique qualities for inscription by Unesco, the release said.
